Follow-Up
Spotted a sentence in an AI reply worth digging into? Select it and start a follow-up in one click. Follow-ups live in their own threads, with layer-by-layer drilling and dashed anchors back to the original text — while the main conversation stays untouched.
Follow-up lets you select any sentence in an AI reply and drill into it in a separate thread, so deep dives never clutter your main conversation.
Overview
Traditionally, asking a follow-up means typing it into the main chat — the context gets diluted, and the details become hard to find later. Drill-down follow-up turns each question into an independent thread:
- Anchored to your selection — every thread remembers the exact text you selected, so you can always jump back to its context
- Multi-layer drilling — answers inside a follow-up can themselves be followed up, layer after layer; the panel shows the current depth ("Layer N")
- Never disturbs the main chat — the main message flow stays as it is; threads are stored and managed separately
- Streaming answers — follow-up replies stream in word by word, and can be stopped or regenerated anytime
Branching is about re-answering the same question along different paths, producing switchable conversation branches. Follow-Up is about exploring a specific detail inside an answer, expanding layer by layer from your text selection. The two work great together.
Starting a Follow-Up
- Select any piece of text in an AI reply — a floating toolbar appears above the selection
- Click "Follow up" to create a new thread quoting the selected text, or click "Explain this" to have the AI explain the selection directly (the prompt prefix for explanations is customizable in settings)
- The follow-up panel opens with a quote card showing your selected text; type your question and send
Next to the chat input there is also a follow-up entry button showing the number of threads in the current conversation — click it to open the thread list.
The Follow-Up Panel
The panel has three parts:
- Quote card — shows the text you selected when starting the thread; "Back to original" jumps to its location, and you can delete the whole thread here
- Message list — the Q&A streams in; every answer supports copy, delete, stop generating and regenerate
- Input box — keep asking in the current thread
The panel header shows a layer indicator (e.g. "Layer 2") and breadcrumb navigation. When several threads were created from the same text, a dropdown lets you switch between sibling threads. The panel can be expanded, collapsed or closed.
Multi-Layer Drilling
The real power is going deeper: inside the follow-up panel, you can select text in the AI's answers too — starting another follow-up enters the next layer (the layer indicator increments). Each drill leaves a dashed annotation on the answer text marking where the question was asked; clicking the annotation jumps to the corresponding thread.
With the breadcrumb and "Back to threads", you can move freely between any layers — untangling a complex question like an exploration tree.
Thread Management
- Thread list — all follow-up threads of the current conversation in one place, each showing the selected text, message count and last activity
- Delete thread — requires confirmation; deleting permanently removes every message in the thread
- Export — copy the whole thread's Q&A to the clipboard in one click, ready to paste into a document or share
- More sharing options — copy as image, save as file, add to folder
Model & Parameters
Follow-up answers inherit the model and parameters of the current chat tab: whichever model you picked for the conversation answers the follow-ups — nothing to configure. Switch chat tabs and new follow-ups follow the new tab's model setting.
